Thirty-Three

Meyra wished she could be outside with her father and her sister. Wished she knew what was going on. Instead, she just took her turn filling in for Dusty while her cousin took her break.

It was just Clint and Commander Weatherby’s table and three others. Nothing too complicated.

She offered the two men coffee, and they both accepted, even though it was summer. She had never understood that. Coffee in the heat—but then again, it was still pouring outside.

“Meyra, she doing ok? Marin,” Clint asked. She’d always liked Clint. He’d dated Miranda when her sister was nineteen, and he’d always been super nice to her and Marin. She felt comfortable with him.

And she liked Commander Weatherby, too. Even if Marin certainly didn’t.

“I don’t know. She’s been having nightmares lately. I hear her at night.” She whispered it so only the two men would hear. “How is Maggie?”

“She’s doing ok. Seeing the same therapist online that she saw when she was down in Texas. And keeping busy with the new baby.”

Meyra nodded. Marin was supposed to drive her out to Maggie and Clint’s in a few days so they could visit Maggie and the babies. “He’s beautiful.”

“He is. I’m actually here because Maggie wants a to-go order and I’m a good husband.” He shot her a smile. It was good to see him happy again.

He and Maggie had gotten married one week after Maggie had gotten out of the hospital from giving birth.

She’d given birth the same day Jasper Grady had hurt Marin.

It would be hard for her to forget that day forever, wouldn’t it?

She looked at Marin again, as their father hugged her one more time.

There had to be a way to get Marin the same kind of help Maggie was getting. She looked back at Clint. “What’s the name of the therapist Maggie is going to online? I think my sister needs more help than we can give her.”

They had to do something.

Marin couldn’t go on like this. It was tearing her sister apart.

Everyone could see that.

“I’ll get Maggie to call you tonight,” Clint said. “We’ll make sure she’s ok, Meyra. I can promise you that.”

But would it be enough?
